LIVERO – chronic liver disease screening
Chronic liver disease progresses for years without symptoms. LIVERO looks for the people who have it without knowing: it informs 18,760 vulnerable adults in the South-West Oltenia region, tests 15,008 of them with rapid hepatitis B and C tests, and refers at least 301 of those detected onward for assessment and staging. We are a partner in this project; the lead partner is the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova.

Who benefits
18,760 adults from vulnerable or socio-economically disadvantaged groups, or from communities with heightened vulnerability, living in the region. The selection pool is 1,536,100 adults. The design explicitly provides for people without identity documents, in detention, in long-term hospital or residential care, and for migrants and refugees.
The participant pathway
18,760 people informed and counselled → 15,008 tested with rapid hepatitis C and B tests, complemented by full blood count, AST, ALT and the FIB-4 score → at least 301 referred for assessment and staging at the regional centre. The conditions covered are hepatitis B, C and D, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease.
Testing runs county by county, roughly six months each, through family medicine practices — at least two doctors per county and at least ten across the project.
What we do in this consortium
Informing, educating and mobilising the target group: six of the eight experts on that activity are ours — an information and education officer, a compliance and patient support officer, two field workers for identification and reporting, two for accompaniment. We also contribute to equipping the centres, to running the screening, to personal data processing, to project management and to communication, with an activity coordinator, an assistant, a finance officer and a procurement officer. Assessment and staging of detected patients, and the regional prevention centre, are the university’s responsibility.
Committed results
EECO01 requires 18,760 participants; 02PSO3 requires 15,008 people tested; 02PSO1 requires one information campaign. Result indicators require 80% of those informed to reach testing and 2% of those tested to enter follow-up. Publicity includes 20,000 leaflets carrying the full set of mandatory graphic elements required by the programme’s visual identity manual.
Confidentiality
The project processes health data, a special category under Article 9 of the General Data Protection Regulation. Every participant signs a processing agreement at enrolment. We publish no images in which participants are identifiable and never associate a person with a medical result.
